Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is currently recruiting for a Mechanical Engineer with experience in the nuclear industry. 

 

The Wood nuclear business provides specialist engineering, safety case support and project management to our customers’ operations within the Nuclear Sector. We have long term relationships with several major clients in the civil nuclear and defence industries.

The Mechanical Engineer will work as part of an integrated project team to deliver high quality engineering services to clients across the Nuclear Sector.

The core responsibility of this role is to design and specify mechanical systems, plant and equipment for process systems.  

 

Typical Work Activities

  • Assist the Lead Engineer / Engineering Manager / Responsible Engineer in managing cross discipline interfaces
  • Successful execution of high quality engineering work to time, quality, budget and customer satisfaction.

 

  • Understanding of fault analysis and reliability assessments using recognised techniques including FMEA, FTA, HAZID, HAZOP.

 

  • Ensuring adequate interfacing between other technical discipline
  • Ensure the design meets the operational / design requirements, and any Safety Functional Requirements (SFRs)
  • Prepare and control Development Specifications and associated documents
  • Check, verify and approve engineering documents in line with the technical and quality plan
  • Specify all installation, inspection, test and commissioning requirements for all relevant equipment specified in the design
  • Produce Design Substantiation Report (DSR) addressing the Safety Functional Requirements (SFRs)

 

  • Carry out site surveys of mechanical plant and equipment and document the results
  • Provide input to design documents, detailed equipment specifications / proposals and production of technical specifications to define quality levels
  • Quality control of design and documentation
  • Ensure all technical documents and data are prepared and structured in accordance with relevant procedures
  • Design change management
  • Assist with technical input for the proposals / tenders.

Skills / Qualifications

Essential Skills and Experience

  • HNC, HND or Degree in a relevant engineering discipline or a Professionally Registered Mechanical Engineer
  • Membership of an appropriate Institute
  • Experience working in a highly regulated industry
  • Previous experience as part of a dedicated or multi-discipline design team
  • Installation, test and commissioning experience would be advantageous
  • Committed to Continuous Professional Development
  • Ability to work unsupervised

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Demonstrable experience in Nuclear Engineering work would be an advantage
  • Experience of analysing structures and equipment using Finite Element Analysis
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD

Special Requirements

  • Must be at least SC cleared with eligibility for DV clearance
