Job Description

Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is currently recruiting for an Ecologist at Senior / Principal or Associate Director level to join the team in the Reading office. The Ecologist will play a lead role in the delivery of some exciting major infrastructure projects and support the management of our growing Southern ecology team.

 

Our long established, but still growing team delivers high quality ecological services on complex projects in a variety of sectors including transport, renewables, nuclear, other power, waste, minerals and property. 

 

Key Responsibilities

 

You will work closely with other ecology team members and with colleagues in other technical disciplines on a wide variety of projects, often taking a lead role on managing and delivering stand alone projects and technical tasks to support consenting processes.  You will undertake technical reporting and technical review.  You will work closely with other senior technical specialists within the wider team and in other environmental disciplines to ensure that technical excellence is achieved in all outputs.  You will attend and contribute to meetings with clients, consultees and other stakeholders.  You will devise appropriate mitigation and habitat creation, enhancement and management schemes.  You will have the opportunity to manage a variety of ecological services, take on business development responsibilities, provide coaching and staff management support to more junior members of the team and support the growth and development of the Southern Ecology team.

Skills / Qualifications

Wood is looking for individuals with a background in high quality technical work and the delivery of Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA) on medium to large scale complex development projects.  Experience of major infrastructure projects and Development Consent Order (DCO) projects would be beneficial.  You must have broad experience and knowledge of UK ecology including ecological survey scoping and methods, biodiversity legislation and policy and licensing procedures and ecological mitigation techniques.  You will also have experience in preparing, reviewing and validating reports and documentation to support planning applications.

 

  • Qualified to degree level or equivalent in ecology or a related subject
  • An MSc or PhD in a relevant subject would be beneficial
  • Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) would be beneficial
  • A valid UK driving licence is essential for this role as is the flexibility to work unsocial hours and to work away on site when required
