Job Description

Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is currently recruiting for a Senior Mechanical Engineer within our Environment & Infrastructure Europe business. This is for an experienced mechanical engineering professional, with an excellent track record within mechanical system design, to work with our multi-discipline project engineering team. Responsible to the Engineering Staff Manager, you will contribute to the project engineering design input at all stages from feasibility and ‘optioneering’ through to the production of detailed designs for procurement and construction.

 

Key Duties:

  • The design engineer, whilst based in our Glasgow office, will deliver the mechanical design content to projects for our clients within the water industry both locally in Scotland and throughout the UK and beyond.
  • The duties will be varied and include, but not limited to:
    • Site asset surveys;
    • Troubleshooting at site;
    • Attending Hazop workshops;
    • Attending factory acceptance tests;
    • Mentoring junior staff;
    • Compilation of:
      • Hydraulic steady state system calculations (pressurised and free-surface);
      • Equipment performance specifications;
      • Equipment and valve schedules;
      • Pipe thrust calculations;
      • Technical reports.

 

Skills / Qualifications

Experience:

 

As a minimum you should have a track record in working with the following:

  • Excel calculation spreadsheets;
  • Development of P&IDs;
  • Plant arrangement drawings;
  • Chemical storage, preparation and, transfer dosing systems (liquid and powder);
  • Pump performance characteristics;
  • Pipework layouts;
  • Service water systems;
  • Rapid gravity filtration systems;
  • Compressed air systems;
  • Plant control systems.

 

Skills:

  • Have a good Client facing manner, and be diligent, confident and highly motivated; whether working as part of the Client’s team, together with Wood colleagues, or on their own
  • Ability to communicate clearly in the English language; both verbally and in the production of good quality written documentation using MS Office applications.
  • Ability to work accurately, flexibly and to integrate their work with other discipline areas, whilst working to tight programme and budget constraints.
  • Have a heightened awareness of personal safety and a good understanding of the CDM Regulations.
  • Ability to travel and visit operational and construction sites as required, to act in a safe manner, and to asset survey, inspect, and witness test mechanical equipment.

 

Qualifications:

 

Mechanical Engineering degree (IET accredited), or the minimum of a mechanical HNC/HND with substantial experience

 

*Possession of a valid UK driving licence is essential, as is a willingness to travel and work for limited periods elsewhere within the UK and on occasion, overseas.
