Job Description

Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is currently recruiting for a Computational Physicist or Mathematician with demonstrable experience in the design and implementation of complex algorithms, particularly for the modelling of nuclear systems, although applicants with experience in other technical domains will also be considered. Strong software skills in a variety of languages including Fortran, Python, and Java are an advantage, especially if applied directly to algorithm implementation. Experience of a direct interface with existing clients and the international R&D community, as well as a role in the generation of new business would be desirable.  This role will present excellent opportunities for the continual development of skills and experience in computational physics and mathematics, particularly where these are applied to nuclear engineering; also the potential to lead technical developments and collaborations, and to manage the teams responsible for their implementation.

Skills / Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree in physics, mathematics, or engineering, or another subject with a strong mathematical component
  • A higher degree in a related subject, or equivalent work experience
  • A strong background in statistical or mathematical theory and implementation
  • Scientific programming skills in languages such as Fortran, Python, Java, C++ or C#
  • Ability to think innovatively and to solve complex problems
  • Ability to quickly and efficiently absorb new technical skills rather than just applying current ones
  • Ability to communicate well, both verbally and in writing with internal and external experts and customers

  • Experience of Monte Carlo and/or deterministic methods for solving the Boltzmann transport equation
  • Experience of nuclear data and associated covariance data
  • Experience of agile software development methods
  • Experience of working in multifunctional teams
  • Experience in the mentoring of early career scientists or engineers
  • Self-motivated, with an ability and desire to work collaboratively with other organisations to create new opportunities
