Job Description

Overview / Responsibilities

Wood are currently recruiting for a Senior Mechanical (Nuclear Lifting/Cranes) Engineer to support the Clean Energy business unit, based from our office location in Gloucester (Barnwood). The successful individual will be report to the account Operations Manager.  Duties will include the design, specification and substantiation of nuclear lifting operations and equipment for nuclear generation clients.

 

Responsibilities

  • Reviewing design and design substantiation for cranes/lifting equipment
  • Producing/revising safety cases for cranes, lifting equipment and dropped loads
  • Advising on maintenance/testing requirements
  • Providing advice on wide ranging technical issues and queries relating to lifting equipment
  • Supporting refurbishment/modification projects to extend life of cranes
  • Planning and estimating of engineering work packages
  • Production engineering deliverables in accordance with relevant regulations, codes, standards and Wood /Client quality assurance requirements
  • Assist in the design/specification of nuclear lifting/crane installations
  • Attending and contributing to design / HAZOP and construction reviews
  • Ensuring Relevant Good Practice and LFE are incorporated
  • Ensure interaction with other disciplines for known interfaces

Skills / Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Understanding of UK regulation of lifting operations on nuclear facilities
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply standards and regulations related to cranes and lifting equipment such as BS 2573, BS EN 13001, BS 7121, BS EN 15001, BS 466, LOLER, PUWER, Eurocodes and Machinery Regulations
  • Design substantiation and justification of engineered safety measures associated with nuclear lifting / cranes
  • Understanding of methods to minimise the risk of nuclear lifting operations through good plant and layout design
  • Knowledge of the management and control methods of lifting operations on a nuclear facility
  • Appreciation of human factors issues relating to lifting operations and system design
  • Communicate clearly and professionally both verbally and in writing with superiors, colleagues, and individuals outside of the Company
  • Knowledge of CDM Regulations

Desirable Skills

  • Experience of safety case management work
  • Knowledge/experience of design and/or substantiation of lifting equipment/cranes in hazardous/highly regulated environments
  • Familiarity with/understanding of crane safety and protection devices

Qualifications & Experience

  • Hold a degree in Mechanical Engineering plus demonstrable experience in the discipline
  • (Alternatively) a minimum of Mechanical Engineering HND plus demonstrable experience in the discipline.
  • Either Chartered (CEng) or Incorporated (IEng) status preferred
  • Nuclear Industry experience (desirable but not essential)
  • Demonstrable experience with heavy lifting systems (preferably nuclear lifts)
