Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is currently recruiting for a General Field Engineer with extensive experience in the Mining and Metals industry, to be based on site in Mauritania. 


  • Lead the Discipline Field Engineering effort on the project
  • Develop and control required site specific project procedures
  • Ensure implementation of the site document control plan
  • Support the Site QA / QC Manager with the implementation of the construction quality control plan
  • Support constructability efforts in the engineering office prior to site mobilization and at the construction site during construction
  • Provide technical support for temporary facility designs
  • Approve required rigging plans
  • Develop and implement the site survey control program
  • Implement the site welding control program
  • Monitor engineering design information for compliance with agreed standard engineering deliverables
  • Assist the Area Construction Managers in the develop and implementation of the site quantity reporting plan
  • Contribute to the site historical reporting process including project lessons learned reports
  • Support Contracts Administration on the site
  • Assist the Commissioning Manager with the development and implementation of a construction completions and systems turnover plan
  • Resolve field nonconforming conditions
  • Provide construction site design interpretation and interface with design engineering
  • Support construction site materials management
  • Assist with receipt inspection of materials received at the site
  • Approve contractor and vendor invoices for technical and quantity accuracy
  • Conduct system testing including hydrostatic testing of piping systems and loop checks of electrical systems
  • Coordinate activities of engineered equipment vendor representatives on site
  • Obtain required site and construction permits for the site and monitor compliance with permit requirements
  • Ensure the implementation and enforcement of the project Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) policy, procedures and plans in close cooperation with the HSE Advisors on the project
  • Identify potential HSE hazards
  • Work in close liaison with the Site QA / QC Manager to ensure that contractors deliver quality work in accordance with their Inspection and Test Plans, in particular:
    • Assist in planning construction methods and procedures 
    • Interpret engineering drawings and prepares field sketches of revisions and additions 
    • Review design drawings, study and resolve Interference problems and review related vendor drawings and installation instructions 
    • Check the acceptability of the methods and practices proposed by the contractor 
    • Assist in the resolving of Technical Queries 
    • Inspect the contractor’s works to ensure that acceptable work standards are achieved 
    • Monitor installation of materials and equipment to ensure conformance with drawings and specifications 
    • Monitor the activities of contractors to ensure compliance with plans and specifications 
    • Assist the Construction Supervisors to ensure that the Subcontractor correctly interprets drawings, specifications and schedules
    • Check equipment before release to the contractor, and advise the Materials Controller of any defects or where damage has occurred 
    • Participate in Construction Punch lists as required by the Project
    • Witness and record all pre-commissioning and commissioning test data 
    • Assist with the recording of all “as built” information in accordance with the requirements of the Contract
    • Liaise with Quantity Surveyor to ensure Key Quantity Reporting Program is maintained

Skills / Qualifications

  • S3 or S4 with at least 5 years’ experience on large multi-disciplinary projects
  • B Eng or B Tech requiring practical experience prior to registration as Pr Eng / Pr Tech
  • At least 10 years’ experience in the construction industry on large multi-disciplinary projects
  • Thorough understanding of Occupational Health and Safety Requirements
  • Good engineering knowledge
  • Thorough understanding of construction methodologies
  • Knowledge and experience in working in remote locations in Africa
  • Highly literate to ensure the clearest communication both verbally and written
  • Ability to speak French or any Arabic language would be an advantage
