Job Description

Overview / Responsibilities

As the demand for our expertise continues to grow, an opportunity has arisen for a Civil Engineer to support our Clean Energy business unit at our Gloucester office. This role is key to delivery of technical support to UK nuclear new build, being part of a dynamic team within Wood with access to our network of Civil Engineers across the business.

 

The successful individual will be responsible for the design or engineering substantiation of Civil Engineering tasks including design studies, optioneering, scheme and outline design. Experience of direct interface with existing clients, as well as excellent relationship building and consultancy skills which lead to the generation of new business would be an advantage.

 

The successful candidate will play an important role in this growing technical workstream over the coming years and the role will provide excellent opportunities for the development of skills, particularly where these are applied to nuclear engineering. Depending upon experience, the role will offer the potential to lead technical developments and collaborations, to mentor others and to manage the team responsible for their implementation.

 

Key Responsibilities

Preparation and technical assessment of:

  • Structural analysis and element design in concrete, masonry and steel
  • Technical documentation to a high level of accuracy
    • Reports & Engineering Advice Notes,
    • Calculations and Calculation Notes,
    • Design Basis Assessment documents,
    • Specifications and Engineering Substantiations.
        

In addition:

  • Delivery to client on time, within budget and to high quality,
  • Able to represent Wood at client meeting,
  • Reviewing design and design substantiation documentation,
  • Producing/revising safety cases for Civil Engineering works,
  • Advising on maintenance/testing requirements,
  • Supporting refurbishment/modification projects to extend life of plant,
  • Planning and estimating of engineering work packages,
  • Production engineering deliverables in accordance with relevant regulations, codes, standards and Wood /Client quality assurance requirements,
  • Attending and contributing to design / HAZOP and construction reviews,
  • Ensuring Relevant Good Practice and LFE are incorporated,
  • Ensure interaction with other disciplines for known interfaces.

Skills / Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Understanding of UK regulations applicable on nuclear facilities,
  • Familiarity with Eurocodes, other international codes and the ability to make engineering judgements from first principles,
  • Understanding of the requirements of other engineering disciplines,
  • Experience of work in a highly regulated environment,
  • Contract awareness,
  • Experience in the delivery of written work. i.e specifications, Design Assessment Reports, Engineering Advice Notes, etc.
  • An undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering,
  • 3 or more years of industry experience,
  • A general understanding of nuclear power generation would be highly beneficial,
  • Experience of working in multifunctional teams,
  • Self-motivated, with an ability and desire to work collaboratively with other organisations to create new opportunities,
  • Ability to think innovatively and solve complex problems,
  • Ability to communicate well, both verbally and in writing,
  • Design substantiation and justification of engineered safety measures,
  • Communicate clearly and professionally both verbally and in writing with superiors, colleagues, and individuals outside of the Company,
  • Flexible location, willing to visit client sites,
  • Knowledge of CDM Regulations.

Desirable Skills

  • Seismic design experience. ACI 349 and ASCE 4,
  • Dropped load, fire and impact analysis,

  • Marine engineering experience,

  • Experience of safety case management work,
  • Knowledge/experience of design and/or substantiation in hazardous/highly regulated environments,
  • Knowledge/experience of operating in an environment with a graded approach to quality processes,
  • Familiarity with our major customers and the processes and procedures they use to control work.

 

Qualifications & Experience,

  • Hold a degree in Civil Engineering plus demonstrable experience in the discipline,
  • Membership of ICE,
  • Either Chartered (CEng) or Incorporated (IEng) status or working towards it.
