  • Overview / Responsibilities

     

     

    Wood is recruiting for a Materials Testing Technician who has experience of performing Fracture Toughness tests. The successful candidate will join the Materials Testing team and will be based at our Birchwood Park office, near Warrington in Cheshire

    This is a laboratory-based role. Whilst the main content of the role will be the operation of mechanical testing machines to determine fracture properties, there will be future requirements for performing tensile, fatigue, and creep tests. These tests include operation at elevated and sub-ambient temperatures, operation in a radiation environment on active specimens and testing in environmental chambers. The operation of peripheral equipment, analysis of data and some interpretation of results are also required. You will be expected to contribute to developing the testing techniques used in the laboratory.

    Woods nuclear division includes one of the UK’s leading Structural Integrity businesses which undertakes research and consultancy on a range of structural and mechanical issues for nuclear power generators and other industries. The predominant activities of the department are a mixture of consulting, research, technical assessment and testing. We provide a number of services, including: Designing and carrying out materials and corrosion research programmes, applying structural integrity techniques to improve plant design, carrying out assessments of existing plant, developing advanced structural integrity methods and standards.

     

    Responsiblities

    • Operate typical rigs, plant and equipment in materials testing laboratories
    • Perform fracture toughness tests to recognised standards.
    • Operate test programmes under well-defined conditions and to a high level of quality
    • Analyse and interprt experimental data
    • Be responsible for the safe operation of rigs and for adopting safe working practices
    • Work flexibly as part of a scientific team 

     

     

     

    Skills / Qualifications

    • Experience of performing some of the following test types would be an advantage: tensile, fatigue, creep, creep crack growth, and component testing
    • Served a recognised mechanical apprenticeship, or have equivalent experience
    • Experience of operation of servo-hydraulic and/or servo-electric testing machines, including associated controllers, data acquisition devices and software
    • Knowledge of the theory behind the testing techniques and International Testing Standards
    • Experience of safety principles and controls within a laboratory environment
    • Experience of contributing to technical reports
    • An ability to be innovate in developing new techniques
