    Wood is currently recruiting for a Senior Consultant - Waste Management Services in our London or Reading office to join the Waste Management team.


    Wood Environment & Infrastructure Solutions UK Ltd is a leading multi-disciplinary environmental consultancy working across many sectors.  We are growing across the business and the business plan within the waste services sector is to grow turnover through winning more and higher value projects.


    Our consultants can work across all areas of waste management as required, but for this role the key aims are to:

    • Contribute to the growth of the waste services business;
    • Build capacity in the service to widen its experience and capabilities; and
    • Maintain and increase customer satisfaction.


     To fulfil these aims the post-holder’s objectives will be to:

    • Lead and contribute to the development of high quality successful proposals that meet our strategic and financial objectives;
    • Use the post-holder’s skills, experience and expertise to make high quality contributions to projects;
    • Deliver projects and the post-holder’s contributions to them on time and within allotted timescales;
    • Guide colleagues to build their capacity to deliver projects and widen their personal capabilities; and
    • Use existing contacts and networks to develop and maintain close relationships with clients and potential clients, and develop business.

     The range of projects the post-holder could expect to contribute to include:

    • Leading and providing support on projects across a wide range of waste management themes, with a focus on municipal waste collection and treatment.
    • Supporting procurement exercises including assessing contract extension proposals, developing tender specifications and associated documentation, and evaluating bidder submissions or working with bidders to develop and review their proposals;
    • The development of business cases to support the delivery of services differently, whether that be through a change of collection method or service management model;
    • Waste collection service reviews to analyse the effectiveness and efficiency of existing services to identify improvements and savings for clients; and
    • The identification and performance and cost modelling of alternative waste collection scenarios and assessing any consequential impacts on contracts, infrastructure, budgets, performance and customers.

    The post-holder can expect to undertake and review numerical and statistical/modelling work alongside qualitative assessments and the presentation of information in various formats.



    Prime Responsibilities and Duties

    • Manage projects by applying our internal procedures ensuring that projects are well monitored, delivered on-time and within budget with high client satisfaction ratings;
    • Act as technical expert providing input in to a range of waste and environment-related projects.  This will include taking responsibility for the drafting of whole reports (with input from others) or contributing to aspects as directed;
    • Attend meetings with clients from inception stage to final reporting.  Such meetings may be attended by a range of stakeholders and clients including Council officers, members and frontline staff, private sector representatives from a number of sectors and other organisations such as WRAP and Defra;
    • Lead and support the development of proposals ensuring they are of a high quality and are clear and competitive;
    • Develop and deliver services and task delivery methodologies that are innovative, robust, time and cost effective and client focussed;
    • Build and maintain relationships with existing clients, potential clients and other networks to maintain and increase the profile of the company and to develop work pipelines

    Skills / Qualifications




    • Experience of the local authority waste management environment playing a role in the delivery of in-house or outsourced service delivery
    • An understanding of waste and recycling management systems
    • Understanding of waste legislation and policy in the UK
    • Experience in the procurement of waste management services
    • Experience of working with Officers and elected members at a senior level
    • An understanding of local authority governance, pressures, constraints and opportunities
    • An understanding of waste strategies and the options available to implement them
    • Experience of analysing operational and financial data to identify and understand the root causes of issues, and develop effective solutions
    • Modelling of waste collection services, understanding the processes, inputs, calculations and outputs, supported by excellent numerical, data handling and spreadsheet skills using Microsoft Excel
    • High levels of written and verbal communication skills and confident in the delivery of presentations
    • Ability to deal proactively with senior colleagues
    • Excellent time management skills, including the ability to respond to requests for outputs at short notice. An ability to innovate and tailor solutions to meet evolving requirements is critical to the role


    • Experience across WCA and WDA functions or close involvement in WDA work acquired through joint working, partnership activities or project-specific activities
    • Experience of working within a technical consultancy environment or within a client organisation involving direct contact with consultants or consultancy projects
    • Experience of working within a private sector waste services company supporting the provision of services to local government and private sector customers
    • Experience in applying Circular Economy business models





    • First degree (ie Bachelors) in a relevant subject, expected to be in the field of science, environment or engineering
    • UK driving licence


    • Second degree (ie Masters) in a relevant subject, expected to be in the field of science, environment or engineering
    • Chartered status with a relevant organisation (eg CIWM, SocEnv)
