Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is recruiting an EC&I Engineer with experience in the nuclear industry to join our Decommissioning business. This role will be based in our Birchwood office in the North West of the UK but there will be a need for periodic visits to client sites, as projects require.


The Decommissioning business provides a mixture of high added value consultancy, engineering and project management support, and delivery of EPC projects, to major clients in the UK and Overseas across both the civil nuclear and defence industries, including Dounreay, Sellafield Limited, Urenco and Magnox.  We are proud to have supported these clients for many years, and our partnering arrangements will enable us to sustain and enhance this support in the long-term. We also deliver a number of projects for other private companies and academia needing decommissioning solutions.


As the business grows, we are looking for a EC&I Engineer to support a number of interesting and challenging projects across our portfolio. Ideal role for an ambitious engineer to join a team with a strong focus on development and growth opportunities for capable individuals.



  • Design, Specification, Procurement, Supply/Manufacture Liaison, Installation, Acceptance Testing and Commissioning in Nuclear Engineering Projects.
  • Liaison with all disciplines.
  • Technical Consultancy.
  • Manage safety by developing and reinforcing the safety culture, compliance with safety regulations (e.g. CDM and CE marking), and the application of safety systems.
  • Develop Instrument Schedules, Block Cable Diagrams, and Instrument Data Sheets.
  • Develop control panel schematic diagrams.
  • Develop schemes for Instrument Loop Drawings, Hook-Up Drawings, and Instrument Mounting Drawings.
  • Develop manufacturing and installation specifications to support new plant and equipment projects and/or Decommissioning projects.
  • Develop Lighting and Small Power designs, including lighting and cable calcs, SLD’s etc, to support other projects.
  • Provide guidance to PDMS engineers and other discipline engineers on Electrical, Control and Instrumentation engineering matters
  • Participate in and advise on all engineering activities and initiatives, including documentation review etc.
  • Perform all assigned work to agreed Safety, Health & Environmental standards and demonstrate a commitment to attaining high levels of HSE (Health, Safety & Environment) performance.
  • Proactive interaction with other disciplines to ensure overall project goals are met. Drive innovative solutions to reduce cost and schedule.
  • Support the Principal Electrical, Control and Instrumentation Engineer, where required.
  • Supervise Graduate Engineers/Apprentice’s.

Skills / Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience of working within a highly regulated industry, 2 of which must have been gained within the nuclear industry.
  • Experience of working within the decommissioning sector would be preferable.
  • A proven track record of delivering in an electrical, control and instrumentation engineering design and delivery team.
  • Full conceptual design background through to on-site delivery.
  • Demonstrable expertise in working to tight deadlines
  • Degree Qualified or relevant experience to an equivalent level.
  • Chartered or working towards chartered status.
  • Understanding of design requirements and equipment qualification to support nuclear safety cases
  • Must have sound knowledge of electrical systems, control systems and process instrumentation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members.
  • Knowledge of AVEVA Instrumentation and AVEVA Electrical shall be advantageous.
  • Familiar with Electrical design principles.
  • Level of commercial awareness
  • Knowledge of Low Voltage Directive.
  • Ideally familiar with drawing checking processes.
  • Experience of bid preparations.
