Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is currently recruiting for a Project Controls Manager with extensive experience in the Mining and Metals industry.


  • Ensure project procedures / systems are established and maintained for Scheduling, Estimating, Cost Engineering, Project Accounting and Document Control within projects and studies. Proactively manage, audit and ensure satisfactory provision of scheduling, estimating, cost engineering and document control services to projects and studies on an as required basis to the satisfaction of the Project and Study Managers
  • Define the basis and strategy on which work packaging and coding is to be carried out for scheduling, estimating, cost engineering and document control to meet specific project and study requirements consistent with proper and efficient control
  • Establish and maintain clear reporting / lines of communication requirements for scheduling, estimating, cost engineering, project accounting and document control within projects and studies
  • Establish / maintain contact with Client managers responsible for Scheduling, Estimating, Cost Engineering, Project Accounting and Document Control and ensure that their requirements are being satisfied on a continuous basis
  • Ensure that dealings with external clients and suppliers are conducted in a professional, ethical manner
  • Manage Project Control Software Wood. Ongoing monitoring / auditing of projects and studies to enable timeous action to be taken if Project Control functions are failing
  • Accountable to continuously review and refine work methods and practices within the functions under control of the Controls Group to ensure that they are conducted in the most cost-efficient and expeditious manner to meet project and study needs
  • Ensure that the Wood Business Management System reflects the practices required in the Africa office and update the procedures accordingly
  • Ensure implementation and maintenance of the integrated Project Control System (Convero), and its common, consistent application across studies and projects
  • Accountable to provide procurement tools (Convero), to projects and studies to ensure that goods and services are ordered according to the project and study schedules, at the best possible prices and with sound contract documentation to minimise commercial risk. Ensure that Project Scheduling is carried out in a structured manner by providing guidance to the Planners seconded to projects and studies
  • Where required, assist project managers with finalisation of contractual claims and disputes
  • Recruit key personnel in consultation with the HR manager and Manager Projects
  • Accountable for the training, mentoring and career development of the Controls Group to ensure that the development needs of the relevant staff are met and that outputs are maximised. Responsible for the development and maintenance of a uniform, high calibre capability within the Wood Scheduling, Estimating Cost Engineering and Document Control functions to the satisfaction of the Manager Projects
  • Personal development of Project Accountants, Cost Engineers, Planners, Estimators and Document Controllers in areas of interest / weakness to the benefit of their functions, through in-house training and judicious attendance at outside seminars
  • Ensure that the relevant training is provided to staff in order to instill an understanding of the systems and procedures

Skills / Qualifications

  • BEng. or BTech degree
  • At least 15 years’ experience on large industrial projects
  • Hands-on experience in a least one of the functions of Project Controls
  • Thorough understanding of the principles of the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge
  • Good organisational abilities
  • Managerial leadership ability
  • Capacity to delegate appropriately
  • Capacity to implement systems, processes and procedures and suggest alternatives and refinements where necessary
  • Ability to motivate and ensure that staff participates in implementing and applying systems, processes and procedures
  • Ability to identify, foster and develop staff for transfer and promotion within the organisation
