  • Overview / Responsibilities

    Wood is currently recruiting for a Principal Mechanical Engineer with extensive experience in the Mining and Metals industry.


    • Provide technical and design engineering expertise to projects and studies
    • Provide coach and guide engineers and designers to increase technical competence of personnel, including knowledge of systems and procedures
    • Undertake technical reviews to ensure that designs are in accordance with project / study requirements and business objectives and are produced in a timely and cost effective manner
    • Work in a safe manner, comply with and contribute to the Wood Health, Safety and Environmental HSE policies, manuals and procedures. At all times consider the health, safety and welfare of fellow workers, visitors, clients, community and the environment
    • Accountable for the quality of deliverables of the discipline design section are in line with the needs of the customer and regulatory authorities
    • Produce and / or review and approve engineering deliverables including models, drawings, calculations, specifications, reports, evaluations etc.
    • Input capital estimates including quantity calculations
    • Act as the key link between the project team and the engineering discipline group
    • Ensure that information flow to drafting and other disciplines serves to maximize output (clear, concise, correct and practical)
    • Set man-hour budgets for engineering and recommend engagement of additional manning as required
    • Monitor the progress and performance of project discipline teams. Give input and provide feedback and support where necessary
    • Responsible for engineering content, discipline design drawings and technical documents within a project / study
    • Oversee design scope changes
    • Provide solutions to engineering problems
    • Attend site inspections, functionality testing and commissioning
    • Provide technical support to the onsite construction teams, projects department and estimating department
    • Analyze feedback from fabricators and help develop personnel to improve performance
    • Provide technical and commercial direction to engineers in relation to design quality, design schedules and design budgets
    • Review feasibility studies documentation and estimates
    • Assist engineering management to assess the suitability of staff and identify the key resources for specific projects / studies
    • Prepare and review technical specifications, calculations, reports, design criteria and other documents as required by the project / study
    • Drive professional development of direct reports and other less experienced staff members
    • Ensure designs produced are optimal in terms of maintainability, serviceability, equipment operating cost and safe operation
    • Ensure design engineering standards are maintained and adhered to on all projects
    • Review equipment tenders and technical adjudications / recommendations
    • Review and comment on design documents and drawings from own discipline from own and other disciplines
    • Compare procurement costs against budget and provide feedback to estimating

    Skills / Qualifications

    • BSc, BEng or B. Tech with a minimum of 15 to 20 years’ experience
    • ECSA registered Professional Engineer
    • Minimum of 15 to 20 years general engineering experience with at least 10 years plus in the mining and minerals processing area in the design office and the field
    • Superior technical engineering knowledge
    • Ability to interpret and analyze site conditions
    • Knowledge of specific extractive metallurgy process / chemical engineering unit operations
    • Extensive plant layout knowledge of mechanical equipment
    • In depth slurry handling and pumping knowledge
    • Bulk materials handling knowledge – conveyor design experience
    • Vessel, tank and plate work design experience
    • Overland pipeline and pump station design experience
    • An understanding of piping engineering and piping materials selection
    • Mechanical package management experience
    • Experience working within or interfacing with a 3D modelling environment
    • Understanding of South African and common International standards and regulatory authority requirements in the mining and minerals processing sector
    • Site experience – construction and commissioning
    • Good commercial awareness / risk management skills
    • Project Planning skills
    • Attention to detail
    • Strong analytical and numerical skills, well-developed computer skills and knowledge of databases
