Job Description

Overview / Responsibilities

Wood Nuclear is recruiting for a Radioactive Waste Disposal Consultant to be based at our offices in Harwell, Oxfordshire.

The international consensus is that higher active radioactive waste should be disposed of in a geological disposal facility (GDF), an engineered facility located deep underground. In the UK this will result in one of the largest, most exciting and important engineering and scientific projects in the 21st century.

Wood is a leading supplier of scientific consultancy and engineering services to the UK and overseas radioactive waste management organisations. We are looking to recruit a highly motivated candidate to be a Consultant, to work on a diverse range of projects.  The successful applicant will be expected to work at our office at Harwell in Oxfordshire and will be part of a multi-disciplinary team (including geologists, chemists, physicists and mathematicians) to deliver a range of projects on behalf of customers such as RWM Ltd, NDA, LLWR Ltd, Magnox Ltd, Sellafield Ltd, as well as a number of other international waste management organisations.

The team at Harwell has led the field of research and assessment work related to the safe disposal of radioactive waste, for over 30 years. The team has a wide breath of both national and internationally respected expertise to provide consultancy, modelling and laboratory studies to underpin the science, technology and engineering to allow the safe disposal of radioactive waste.

Our work on supporting the understanding of chemical aspects of radioactive waste disposal is wide ranging, from the development of understanding of the behaviour of radionuclides in the repository and surrounding rocks/groundwater (including using geochemical models) to building understanding of the performance and long-term evolution of engineered barrier materials (cements, bentonite) and waste-forms.
  • Support to desk-based waste disposability assessments. All waste producers have to demonstrate that the wastes they are producing will be suitably conditioned, encapsulated and packaged for disposal in a future UK Geological Disposal Facility. The successful candidate will be expected to provide input to these desk-based assessments
  • Decommissioning and option studies, related financial and strategic planning in support of geological disposal
  • Assessing the environmental impact of nuclear stores and repositories
  • Undertaking work to understand the behaviour and impact of radionuclides in the environment
  • Assessment of radioactive discharges from nuclear facilities
  • Production of concise and well-written technical reports and presentation of results to customers
