Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is currently recruiting for a Senior HSSE Manager to be based in Reading, UK. This role is to lead the implementation of all Wood health, safety, security, environment and assurance policies, strategies, objectives, procedures and processes in both the NEMEA business unit and the largest operating unit in NEMEA which is the Reading office. This is to deliver the ultimate objective of keeping our employees safe from harm and caring for the environment.


Working with the Regional Leadership teams, the HSSEA Director provides timely advice and guidance on all matters pertaining to Health, Safety, Security, Environment and Assurance with respect to Legislation, Company Policy and Management System and Client requirements and above all, assuring the safety of people impacted by our work.


A key objective is ensuring that effective HSSEA management is provided for all the offices and installations in their region by selection, coaching and control of an efficient and competent team of regional and specialist HSSEA organisation.

Skills / Qualifications

  • Lead HSSE for the NEMEA business unit. Set the HSSE strategies in accordance with Wood requirements and oversee their implementation and application in each of the NEMEA operating centres in Europe and the Middle East
  • Directly lead HSSE for the Reading operation, which is the largest operating unit in NEMEA
  • Drives the planning, implementation, monitoring and review of all aspects of the Wood HSSEA management system
  • Support the organisation’s aim to avoid harm to those impacted by our operations, and minimise or eliminate environmental harm
  • Support the organisation’s aim to avoid operational losses, maximise brand protection and to assure continued process capability to Wood clients
  • Provide support to Managers and HSSEA reports in the development and roll-out of Wood HSSEA objectives and other initiatives
  • Provide expert analysis and recommendations on the HSSEA aspects of bids, mergers and acquisitions
  • Provide support to Managers in incident and accident investigations through the use of an appropriate Investigation process
  • Ensure that internal and external compliance certifications remain operational
  • Ensure HSSE legislation is complied with at all times, and report any breaches
  • Ensure that all HSSEA documentation is kept up-to-date and ensure policies and practices are both applied and effective, by means of a structured and risk-based assurance process
  • Ensure close out of assurance and / or audit findings, competent audit reports and proper and effective corrective and preventive actions
  • Sponsor and promote HSSEA awareness and development initiatives
  • Support Managers and HSSEA Advisors in the timely reporting of both leading and lagging HSSEA Indicators
  • Undertake lagging indicator reviews of incident/accident trends and provide timely advice to Business Management on actions and initiatives
  • Ensure effective working practices are safe and add to an improved Company HSSEA performance
  • Monitor and where appropriate adopt ‘best-practice’ and developing ‘leading-edge’ HSSEA initiatives as appropriate to the business
  • Ensure effective suppliers’ HSSEA performance across the region
  • Manage an effective and efficient team of HSSEA professionals
  • Provide mentorship and training for graduate/new recruits into the HSSEA team
  • Provide cross-business / pan-Wood support as required


  • Degree in relevant technical, industry or HSSEA specific discipline
  • ONC/HNC or equivalent in Technical, HSSEA or related industry
  • Experience of working in and managing a HSSEA Management System environment
  • Supervisory or direct management experience of more junior staff members
  • Project/contract experience in O&G or other comparable industry
  • Broad HSSEA experience in similar / other industry
