Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is seeking applications from experienced HSSE Manager to support the Kemerton Lithium project based in our Perth Office.

The HSSEA manager will pprovide the project team with HSSE direction and leadership in line with Wood policies and procedures, legislative requirements and best practice. They will ensure that the project HSSEA Management System is implemented, managed and maintained in accordance with the Wood Beyond Zero core expectations.

Albemarle Kemerton Plant, a greenfield world scale Lithium Hydroxide Monohydrate production plant to be located at the Kemerton Strategic Industrial Area approximately 160 km south of Perth, Western Australia, and 17 km north-east of the existing port town of Bunbury.


The Albemarle Kemerton Plant will initially comprise of three (3) trains, each producing 20,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) Lithium Hydroxide Monohydrate. First product target by 2020. Expansion to five (5) trains will take the ultimate site production to 100,000 tpa by around 2025. Wood has been appointed by Albemarle to implement the Albemarle Kemerton Plant.



  • Work collaboratively with the project and construction management teams to provide and implement strategic HSSE direction
  • Participate in contractor and supplier HSSE pre-qualification and selection processes
  • Facilitate the implementation of the HSSE Beyond Zero program on the project in accordance with the Wood core values
  • Have input and participate in project reviews and risk assessments.
  • Investigate and assess HSSE staffing requirements for the project in consultation with the HSSE Australia Manager & project management team
  • Develop, in consultation with the Project Management team, the project specific HSSE management systems, plans and procedures in accordance with the Beyond Zero framework
  • Audit and report compliance with HSSE management plans as scheduled;
  • Provide advice and support to Project Management to ensure continuous improvement of HSSE management on the project
  • Ensure accident / incident and investigations are reported and conducted in accordance with Wood mandatory procedures
  • Develop and review a training needs analysis, matrix and plan for the project and ensure training packages are available
  • Facilitate the development of induction and orientation programs for Project
  • Develop and test all Emergency Management Plans for the project
  • Evaluate new HSSE equipment and products
  • Facilitate Project Risk Workshops at each stage of the project and ensure risk registers are kept up to date
  • Provide Monthly HSSE Reports within the project and to the HSSE Australia Manager
  • Conduct detailed Monthly trend analysis of Incidents on the project and provide documented reports to the HSSE Australia Manager and the project management team
  • Promote an enthusiastic HSSE culture that delivers positive commitment to and engages all employees in continuous improvement in HSSE performance
  • Be an active role model and lead by example to promote Wood’s values and Code of Business Conduct
  • Full implementation of the HSSE Management Plan for the project

Skills / Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent in WHS or related discipline
  • Formal qualification in Workplace Training and Assessment desirable
  • Formal qualification in WHS Auditing desirable
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in the construction and mining industry
  • Ability to compile, maintain and analyse Project HSSE statistical data including graphical presentation
  • Ability to compile, maintain and analyse Project HSSE Risk data including graphical presentation
  • Ability to facilitate Project HSSE risk assessment processes
  • Ability to develop & present subject-related training
  • Knowledge on ISO 31000 (Risk), OHSAS 18001 (Safety) and ISO 14001 (Environment)
  • Knowledge on PMBOK Project Management principles
  • Knowledge on HSSE Management Systems & International Best Practises
  • Ability to develop & perform HSSE assurance audits
  • Ability to perform accident & incident investigations, including report writing
