  • Overview / Responsibilities

    Wood is currently recruiting for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer with extensive experience in the Mining and Metals industry.

     

    Main Purpose of the Role;

    • Provide technical and design engineering expertise to projects and studies.
    • Provide coaching and guidance to engineers and designers to increase technical competence of personnel, including knowledge of systems, procedures and engineering design technology/methodology.
    • Undertake technical reviews to ensure that designs are in accordance with project/study requirements and business objectives and are produced in a timely and cost - effective manner to required quality standards.
    • To work in a safe manner, complying with and actively contributing to the Wood Health, Safety and Environmental HSE policies, manuals and procedures. At all times considering the health, safety and welfare of fellow workers, visitors, clients, community and the environment.

    Key Responsibilities;

    • Produce designs in accordance with project, discipline, statutory regulations, good practice and company procedural requirements.
    • Prepare and review technical specifications, contract specifications, calculations, reports, design criteria and other documents required by the project / study.
    • Responsible for engineering content, discipline design drawings and technical documents within a project / study.
    • Ensure design is completed within design man-hour and procurement budgets.
    • Ensure designs produced are optimal in terms of maintainability, serviceability, equipment operating cost and safe operation.
    • Ensure design engineering standards are maintained and adhered to on all projects.
    • Provide technical design guidance to Project staff on various aspects of design
    • Review equipment and installation contract tenders and produce/review technical adjudications/recommendations.
    • Review and comment on design documents and drawings from own discipline and other disciplines.
    • Compare procurement costs against budget and provide feedback to estimating.
    • Review and approve vendor documentation for compliance with project / study specifications.
    • Estimate, control and review design scope changes.
    • Provide feedback on the quality, use and value of design systems used in design.
    • Attend factory acceptance tests and provide input to vendor’s test documentation.
    • Assist with plant installation and commissioning.
    • Liaise with client to ensure that design is in accordance with agreed requirements/standards.
    • Liaise with Site construction staff on technical queries for resolution of engineering design issues.
    • Provide input into project close out reports with comparison of design and procurement budgets.
    • Conduct regular design group meetings within a project / study context for engineers and designers.
    • Provide timely reports regarding all discussions held and progress made in relation to designs and plant layouts. Ensure all correspondence is minuted.
    • Allocate work and provide technical assistance to discipline engineers and designers on projects / studies.
    • Input into progress reports, including listing achievements and highlighting technical/design issues as required.
    • Provide input to proposals and man-hour estimates.
    • Work closely with other consultants and other disciplines and Project/Study Managers to ensure that client’s objectives are met in a timely manner.
    • Ensure compliance and take initiative for safety, health and environmental issues.

    Skills / Qualifications

    • BSc, BEng or B. Tech or National Diploma   with a minimum of 10 to 15 years’ experience.
    • ECSA registered
    • Minimum of 10 years Mechanical design experience in the mining and minerals processing area in the design office and the field
    • Site experience  –  construction and commissioning
    • Desirable competencies, skills and experience;
      • Slurry pumping experience
      • Materials Handling experience
      • Mechanical Package experience
      • Platework design experience
