  • Overview / Responsibilities

    Wood is currently recruiting for a Head of Project Management (PMO) to join the team in any of the following locations: London, Reading, Leamington Spa, or Newcastle.

     

    E&IS UK provides consultancy services to a range of private and public sector customers including environmental science, architecture, engineering and design, policy, modelling and geotechnical / remediation advice.  Our customers include organisations involved in the delivery of buildings and infrastructure in sectors including Defence, Transport, Utilities and Government. Each service we provide to our customers is managed as a project within E&IS from the proposal stage through delivery to final project closure when the service to our customer is complete. E&IS UK has over 1,000 active projects delivered by around 300 project managers. The E&IS UK PMO is an internal service supporting our project managers in the delivery of our projects through ownership of the project management methodology, undertaking assurance and reporting on project performance, managing project manager competence assessment and training and supporting project managers in the effective control of projects in our ERP system, including project set up, monthly performance review and closure. 

     

    The Head of PMO will lead the application of good practice in project management to the projects delivered across Environment and Infrastructure Solutions UK (E&IS). This position will be responsible for defining the methods and practices to be used by E&IS Project Managers, improving the overall PPM maturity and expanding its value and influence across the E&IS UK organisation and providing support to the delivery of projects. Responsible for establishing and managing the PMO with the objective of ensuring all projects are delivered using ‘good practice’. The Head of PMO leads the team covering four core functions:

    • Maintenance of the Project Delivery Process and supporting project managers to apply good practice through assurance of delivery
    • Management of competence and training of Project Managers
    • Support to Project Managers for financial control of projects
    • Maintenance of Project Management and Financial systems

     

     

    Key Responsibilities

    • Owner of the organisation's project management approach, processes, methods, tools, guidelines and standards within a stable framework that supports all project teams and stakeholders to improve the probability of successful project delivery
    • Leadership of the continuous improvement of the organisations project delivery approach
    • Define, manage and direct the PMO work effort, which includes best practices and techniques in identifying, quantifying and tracking projects across the business
    • Build and maintain relationships with senior leadership and key PMO stakeholders, and acts as a trusted advisor
    • Develop and sustain the project management community of practice to facilitate collaboration and best-practice sharing among project managers, key PMO stakeholders and business units
    • Oversee the project management governance and assurance approach for the organisation's portfolio of projects across all business units and managing reporting of project delivery performance
    • Communicate status of the projects to all stakeholders within functions/business units
    • Participate in Project Reviews
    • Provide advice and support to PM’s and PD’s on how to improve project performance

    Skills / Qualifications

    Technical Skills, Knowledge and Experience

    • Experience of creating, managing and/or executing a PMO function
    • Significant experience of medium to high complexity projects within the Programme and Project environment
    • Experience leading projects from inception to completion
    • Extensive background with project management processes, techniques and tools
    • Capable of defining, explaining and maintaining a high-level, longer-term view of projects' relationships
    • Good understanding of performance and management tools in the delivery
    • Ability to manage a range of project types
    • Demonstrable knowledge of project management good practice as applied to consultancy projects (Schedule, Cost, Risk)
    • Experience in the management of consultancy contracts 

    Management Skills, Knowledge and Experience

    • Exceptional Leadership and Management skills
    • Experience in the management of teams of 15+ individuals
    • Good knowledge of operational requirements within a consultancy business (P&L, financial controls, utilisation, etc.)
    • Confident communicator and influencer at an Operational level
    • Ability to establish and maintain high level relationships across the organisation
    • Skilled at managing interpersonal relations to build rapport inside and outside the immediate PMO, and can motivate through leadership and mentor development of more-junior team members
    • Ability to work well with others, harness different skills and experience, and build a strong sense of team spirit
    • Ability to successfully manage multiple concurrent objectives or activities, and effectively make decisions to prioritise tasks and allocate time
    • Ability to work in a multi-office environment and willingness to travel to other offices as required

     

    Qualifications and accreditations

    Essential

    • MSc or Degree in Programme/ Project management or Business subject
    • Membership of appropriate professional institution – APM or PMI , (MCIOB, CIBSE, ICE, RICS, CMI - accepted)

     

    Desirable

    • Security Cleared (or willingness to conduct vetting process)
    • Post graduate qualification appropriate to project management
    • Practitioner - Portfolio, Programme and Project Offices (P3O)
    • Project Management related qualification - MoP, MSP, MoR, MoV, Change Management, AGILE
