  • Overview / Responsibilities

    Wood are recruiting for a Senior Project Manager to be based at Barnwood.  The PMR team within the Clean Energy Generation Services UK business is looking for a skilled and experienced Senior Project Manager to join our team supporting our key client EDF, and the their Nuclear Reactors at their UK plants, on our long term framework with them. The GSUK team has an annual turnover in excess of £40M, contributing to the wider Clean Energy target. The PMR team is split across multiple locations in the UK; from our home office in Knutsford, the client head office at Barnwood and at various plants around the UK. You will be part of a large client lead team at clients head office in Barnwood, supporting multiple projects within the UK wide project portfolio.  Senior Project Managers are accountable to the PPM (Project Portfolio Manager) or equivalent Group Head for successful delivery of all aspects of their assigned projects. They also support the PPM or equivalent Group Head by leading, coaching and mentoring Project Managers/Assistant Project Managers as required to improve team performance and competence. The Senior Project Manager sets the project execution strategy in agreement with the PPM and uses a cross functional project team to deliver a large, complex project, a programme of work or a portfolio of projects safely in line with company policies and procedures, achieving agreed goals and objectives. No direct reports.

    Key responsibilities:

     

    As Sample Preparation Team Leader you will join a business that supports a wide variety of different laboratory analyses.

     

    Your responsibilities will include:

     

    Responsibilities

     

    • Identifying, implementing and complying with applicable technical, safety, environmental and quality standards, client procedures and policies and other relevant legislative and regulatory requirements
    • Managing the performance of other Project Managers/Assistant Project Managers and taking responsibility for the delivery of either a large complex project, a programme or a small portfolio of projects
    • Acting as coach and mentor to other Project Managers/Assistant Project Managers and helping them in developing their project management knowledge and experience
    • Applying the company project controls standards and developing, maintaining, reporting and trending an accurate baseline
    • Securing, assigning and maintaining a team containing all the resources required to successfully deliver the project/programme of work, including specialist support staff
    • Leading and coaching the team members creating a positive team working environment
    • Identifying and assessing risks and implementing effective risk mitigation strategies
    • Managing assigned projects/programme of work from concept (Gate A) to close out (Gate D) and maintaining effective integrated execution strategies and plans
    • Implementing and maintaining effective communication to the team and all stakeholders including Stations, Regulators and central support functions to ensure full understanding and commitment to the deliverables
    • Meeting the specified functional criteria
    • Controlling scope and cost to the agreed baseline, instigating and managing change control as necessary
    • Controlling Project Documentation through Document and Configuration Control
    • Contract management responsibilities where delegated in the F3 Nomination of Contract Roles form
    • Maintain regular involvement of and communications with the Project/Programme Sponsor
    • Ensuring that any control arrangements identified, as part of the implementation of Licence Conditions, are adhered to during the lifecycle of the project/programme of work (for new plant this includes specific arrangements under SLC 19, 20 and 21)

     

    Accountabilities

     

    To the Line Manager for:

    • Delivering the project/programme of work in a safe manner to the specified functional criteria, goals and objectives, compliant with appropriate legislation, Procedures and within the approved baseline, scope, cost, schedule and quality requirements
    • Implementing and maintaining a competent, effective and efficient Integrated Delivery Team within the company’s HR framework
    • Minimising the delivery risks (threats) and maximising opportunities
    • Maximising delivery efficiency and effectiveness
    • Early identification of issues and/or concerns that either have the potential or will impact the baseline
    • Proposing, agreeing, implementing and reporting corrective actions to secure the baseline
    • Providing accurate and timely information, data and reports regarding the project/programme of work status, activities and performance, making use of earned value management where appropriate

     

    To the Project/Programme Sponsor for:

    • Maintaining alignment of the project/programme of work to agreed outputs and success criteria
    • Initiating change control with the Project/Programme Sponsor should the agreed outputs or success criteria be impacted by any changes
    • Documenting any post-Gate D activities that the Project Manager will complete
    • Disseminating relevant learning opportunities via the Operational Experience and/or Lessons Learned system as appropriate

     

    Authorities:

    Approvals in principle are as follows:

    • The assignment of key project/programme of work personnel
    • Execution strategies and plans
    • The commitment of sanctioned investment funds within delegated financial powers
    • All scope and change control variations within agreed limits
    • Contract management tasks as delegated via the F3 form including instruction of supply chain partners within agreed limits

    Skills / Qualifications

    • Degree educated, ideally in engineering or related subject. Chartered engineer or equivalent professional qualification
    • APMP formal Project Management qualification or equivalent
    • Competency up to IPMA level B - Knowledge level 6 and Experience Level 6
    • The Senior Project Manager must have a good, detailed understanding of a wide range of project management and programme management competencies and be able to evaluate and adopt them within a complex environment. They must be able to coach and mentor other project managers in the understanding and applying project management competencies. They must have personally executed most of the project/programme management competencies by managing a number of complex projects or programmes. These need to have involved a knowledge of engineering, technical development, design, procurement, significant safety case production and development, construction and installation/commissioning management and commercial contracting. They should also have significant brown-field project management experience and experience of operating at all levels within corporate support centres
    • Must be able to demonstrate an understanding of Safety Cases including how they are developed and implemented, relevant Health and Safety and Environment legislation including CDM and the actions required to achieve compliance along with a proven track record of working within highly regulated environments with high safety standards and culture. They must also have a good understanding of the needs of quality and how quality is assured and controlled along with relevant experience of commercial, contractual and financial project drivers. Experience of fast-track projects and project start up with multiple work streams requiring rapid development to a conclusion
    • Must have excellent communication and organisational skills with the ability to develop relationships and maintain effective networks and be results-focussed tempered with a team-centred approach. Must have had experience of dealing with a wide range of both internal and external stakeholders. They must be a strong conflict manager with a firm and assertive approach but take the analytical approach with a “can do” problem solving ability. Will require strong leadership, influencing and interface management skills and be capable of working with communities with conflicting focuses
    • Demonstrable experience of managing technical and/or complex safety case projects throughout the full project lifecycle, ideally across a range of complex multi-discipline projects and environments, and management of an integrated project team including staff, agency and assigned functional support. They must be able to demonstrate experience of estimating, cost control, planning and commercial awareness including the preparation of business cases and sanction/ funding papers
    • They should be experienced in the preparation of reports and information using packages such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint, be proficient in the use of estimating, scheduling, programming and risk tools and in the use of Earned Value tools. Analytical approach with high-level problem-solving ability
