    As demand for our expertise continues to grow, an opportunity has arisen for a Principal Civil & Structural Engineer to support the Wood Nuclear business unit at our Glasgow office. The role will support the UK nuclear Generation Services, UK nuclear New Build and Decommissioning businesses as part of a nuclear SQEP Civil & Structural team within Wood.

     

    The successful candidate will be responsible for either directly undertaking, or supervising design and engineering substantiation of Civil & Structural Engineering tasks including; studies, optioneering, schematic and detailed design, detailing and specification of new conventional and nuclear safety related works. Experience of directly interfacing with Clients, , and Contractors is desirable. Experience of leading teams of engineers and technicians, executing the function of Lead Engineer on projects in the UK, in compliance with the CDM Regulations, is required.

     

    The successful candidate will play a key role in assisting the Principal Engineers, and Operations Manager in developing and expanding the technical capability and credibility of the Glasgow office, being involved in the personal and technical development of staff within the Civils team. The successful candidate shall have excellent technical skills and shall ideally have Subject Matter Experience (SME) in either the execution of concrete structures, steel structures, seismic analysis/design, or nuclear engineering. Previous experience in the nuclear engineering sector is highly advantageous. In view of the desire to grow a secure and long-term Civils capability, this is a permanent staff position.

     

    Overview/Responsibilities

    A wide ranging and in-depth technical knowledge and educational base are required to ensure the delivery of challenging project and Client targets.

    • Undertake all work in accordance with Wood quality assurance system, with due regard to Health, Safety, Security and Environmental (HSSE).
    • To work collaboratively and in a collegiate atmosphere in the local Glasgow civils team and engage with specialists in the wider Wood.
    • Undertake the role of Senior Civil/Structural Engineer on projects, leading teams (with support from Principal Engineers) in the preparation of basis of design, design calculations, engineering substantiation reports, engineering details/drawings, risk assessments, method statements, specifications and similar project documentation, and undertaking on site inspections.
    • Generally, the candidate will work under the direction of the Principal Engineers, and Operations Manager, but as required shall assume the role of Lead Engineer on projects, or for specific work packages/areas.
    • Where undertaking the role of Lead Engineer, the candidate shall be responsible for taking ownership of the delivery and line management of the engaged Civils resource(s), including quality and technical assurance, within budgetary and programme constraints, reporting to the Operations Manager and Project Management functional lead.
    • Carry out the role of Originator, and/or Checker, of civil & structural analyses and designs in concrete, steel and masonry.
    • Undertake role of Originator, and/or Checker, of technical documentation and project deliverables, including calculations, reports, specifications and drawings.
    • Undertake the role of Technical Author in the preparation of technical documents to support License Condition, Periodic Safety Review and Safety Case/Pre-Construction Safety Report documentation.
    • The candidate shall be expected to work independently and may at times be required to work remotely, either on site, or embedded into Client project offices/teams.
    • Support business development activities including tender documents, cost estimates, resource planning and activity scheduling.
    • Excellent communication skills in English, both oral and written. Proficiency in other languages, notable French, Chinese or Japanese shall be highly advantageous.
    • The candidate shall be required to provide support to engineers under training, mentoring staff working towards IEng/CEng status with ICE and/or IStructE.
    • Assist in delivering/deliver technical discipline meetings and presentations (lunch & learns) on relevant civil, structural and/or nuclear engineering subject, to the local and wider Civils team(s) within Wood.
    • The role shall require a degree of flexibility and ability to travel both in the UK and overseas, to allow visits to Client offices, site and potentially overseas as required.

     

    Skills / Qualifications

    • An accredited Bachelors (BEng/BSc) degree with Honours in Civil or Structural Engineering plus an appropriate Masters (MSc) degree, or an accredited Integrated Masters (MEng) degree, or Engineering Doctorate (EngD/PhD), accredited by UKSPEC (engc.org.uk/ceng), as satisfying the requirements for CEng registration.
    • Shall hold professional status of either the ICE and/or IStructE, either to IEng or CEng registration, as appropriate to the educational base, OR;
    • In lieu of professional qualifications, demonstrable and substantial experience may be considered where professional status could be obtained through, for example, the Technical Report Route.
    • A minimum of 7+ years’ post-graduate experience in the field of civil and/or structural engineering design. Ideally the candidate will possess 10+ years’ experience.
    • Extensive and in-depth knowledge and recent experience in the application of Eurocodes, specifically EN 1990, EN 1991, EN 1992, EN 1993, EN 1996 and EN 1997. Experience in the use of American design codes (relevant ACI, ASCE, AISC) would be advantageous.
    • Experience in performing seismic analysis/design to relevant Eurocode and American design codes is desirable.
    • Experience in designing for blast and impact load effects to relevant Eurocode and American design codes would be advantageous.
    • Proficiency in standard software packages such as SAP2000, STAAD Pro and experience in finite element analysis methods (FEA) would be advantageous.
    • Experience of working with remote engineering resources and engaging in inter-office working shall be advantageous.
    • Demonstrable experience of nuclear engineering in nuclear new build, plant operations or decommissioning is highly desirable.
    • Experience in supervising, coordinating and managing project teams and experience in Lead Engineer roles.
    • A full, clean UK driver’s license would be highly advantageous
    • Ability to gain, and acknowledgment to submit to UK security clearance(s), as required to support project roles.
