    Wood Environment & Infrastructure Solutions is currently seeking a Principal Civil Engineer to join our Infrastructure team in our Birmingham office.

     

    The role would suit a proactive, enthusiastic and self-motivated individual looking to advance their career in a dynamic, growing team. This position would ideally suit someone with a highway or traffic engineering background with considerable experience of working in the Public Sector.

    You will have the opportunity to work on some of the most prestigious projects across the UK. Key clients include Local Authorities, Crown Estate, Homes England and MOD and working with these clients to deliver their aspirations and ambitions will be an important factor. You will play a leading role in the design and assessment of infrastructure projects within multidisciplinary design teams and will take appropriate responsibility for the delivery and quality of the design elements.

    Key Duties:

    • Senior member of a team of engineers assuming the responsibility for carrying out preliminary and detailed designs including the preparation of supporting Specifications
    • Supporting / Management responsibilities for a team of people
    • Undertake Health & Safety responsibilities including ensuring a safe and healthy working environment for the project team members and fulfilling all responsibilities for health and safety in design
    • Act as a Project / Discipline Manager as necessary including costing, programming and monitoring of financial performance
    • Developing and responding to Client briefs
    • Input into wider team project resourcing, project planning, programming and delivery
    • Ensure technical content and quality of output produced is in line with the project brief and Wood quality assurance procedures
    • Manage sub-consultants to produce deliverables against agreed timescales and in line with budget
    • Attend internal and external Project Progress meetings and represent Wood at in a Client facing capacity
    • Prepare detailed client briefs, fee proposals, technical responses and study reports for Manager approval and contribute to major bids

    Skills / Qualifications

    Experience & Skills
    Essential:

    • Experience of working in the Public Sector
    • Previous experience of leading a team and / or managing staff
    • Demonstrable experience in leading highway / traffic engineering projects through concept, feasibility, preliminary and detailed design stages
    • Demonstrable experience of managing projects to time, cost and quality criteria
    • Excellent technical and communication skills.
    • Experience in preliminary and detailed design activities including demonstrable ability using CAD, MX, Civil 3D etc.
    • Understanding and application of Health and Safety policies, procedures and requirements
    • Application and compliance with relevant statutory legislation applicable to the services being delivered
    • Demonstrable application of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges, Specification for Highway Works, Manual for Streets, TSRGD and the Traffic Signs Manuals

    Desirable:

    • NEC3 / 4 Contract experience
    • Working knowledge of Highway Authority Sections 38, 116, 117 and 278 and Water Authority sections 104, 116 and 185 agreements
    • Previously or currently working for one of Wood's direct competitors
    • Multi-sector and international experience
    • Experience of working on major infrastructure projects

     

    Qualifications:
    Essential:

    • Qualified to degree level (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering
    • Graduate Member of a relevant professional body such as ICE, CIWEM, CIHT, IHE
    • Working towards, or achieved, an appropriate professional status with membership of a relevant professional institution
