    Woods nuclear business supports customers in the energy generation, new build, decommissioning and defence sectors.

    Wood is currently recruiting for a Mathematician, Probablist or Statistician with demonstrable experience in the design & implementation of complex mathematical and statistical algorithms primarily for the Monte Carlo simulation of radiation transport and the quantification of uncertainty in the results of complex nuclear modelling calculations.

    Experience of a direct interface with existing clients & the international R&D community, as well as the generation of new business would be an advantage. Strong software skills in a variety of languages including Fortran, Python and Java would also be useful for algorithm implementation.


    This role will present excellent opportunities for the continued development of skills and experience in mathematics, probability and statistics, particularly where these are applied to nuclear engineering; also the potential to lead technical developments and collaborations, and to manage the team responsible for their implementation.

    Skills / Qualifications


    • An undergraduate degree in mathematics, physics or engineering or any other subject with a strong mathematical component
    • A strong background in probability, statistical or mathematical theory and implementation
    • Programming skills in languages such as Fortran, Python or Java
    • Ability to think innovatively and to solve complex problems
    • Ability to quickly and efficiently absorb new technical skills rather than just applying current ones
    • Ability to communicate well, both verbally and in writing with internal and external experts and customers
    • Self motivated, with an ability and desire to work collaboratively with other organisations to create new opportunities 


    • Experience of Monte Carlo and/or deterministic methods for solving the Boltzmann transport equation
    • A higher degree in a related subject, or equivalent work experience
    • Familiarity with branching Markov chains
    • Familiarity with stochastic differential equations
    • Experience of spectral methods, principal component analysis, polynomial chaos
    • Knowledge of quasi Monte Carlo and multi-level Monte Carlo techniques
    • Experience of nuclear data and associated covariance data
    • Experience of scientific Fortran
    • Experience of agile software development methods
    • Experience of working in multifunctional teams
    • Experience in the mentoring of early career scientists or engineers
